How to
convert Half Life weapons to Poser Props ?

You need the shareware "MilkShape 3D" for this tutorial.
You can download it here.
Mete Ciragan has developed a really powerfull tool.


Step 0

Create a folder and copy the weapon you want to use
in it. This will be far easier this way,
because decompiling .mdl files creates many smaller files.

So, first, .mdl files are the 3d animated models
in the Half Life engine ( weapons, monsters, and so on ... ).

The weapons are in a folder called : ...models/weapons.
I will use Counter Strike for this tutorial.

Copy " v_flashbang_r " in your new folder.
( v_ models are the ones displayed
in the first person view of the game,
and are the most detailed ).


Step 1

Open MilkShape 3D and choose the option
Tools/Decompile CS Right MDL file as shown below.
( CounterStrike has two models, right or left handed ... )




In the option window, choose :
Reference ( the geometric model ) and
Textures.




Now go to : File/Import/Half Life SMD and
select only Triangles in the window.




Once imported, you should see your object
in the four views. Go to the Groups window ( on the left )
and delete hand and thumb groups
( this will also delete corresponding materials ).
So, select a group and click on delete.




Once there is just the weapon on screen, go to :
File/Export/Wavefront OBJ and export your model
with a name like " flashbang ".


Erase hand.bmp, thumb.bmp and f_flashbang_template.smd
( you will no more need them ).
